GPT Image 2.6 vs Nano Banana 2.1: which is better for ads?
Updated
For finished ads with exact copy and real packaging, GPT Image 2.6 is the stronger choice on current evidence. OpenAI's GPT Image models held the top five places on Arena's text-to-image leaderboard on 2 November 2026, with Google's Nano Banana 2.1 seventh. Nano Banana 2.1 wins on price and size: Google charges $0.0336 for a standard 1K image and $0.113 for 4K, accepts up to 14 reference images and offers Batch at half price.
We measured GPT Image 2.6 on real ads at $0.088 to $0.108 each, with five reference images at high quality. We have not yet run Nano Banana 2.1 through the same pipeline, so the Google figures below are Google's own and the quality comparison relies on public leaderboards.

Price: Nano Banana 2.1 is cheaper per image
Google prices Nano Banana 2.1 by output resolution: $0.0336 for a 1K image, $0.0504 for 2K and $0.113 for 4K, and half that through Batch. OpenAI prices GPT Image 2.6 by the token, so the cost moves with the size, the quality level and how many images you send in.
For a like for like 1024 x 1024 image, eesel's estimates from OpenAI's calculator put GPT Image 2.6's output at about $0.053 on high quality and $0.025 on low. So Nano Banana 2.1 is roughly a third cheaper than GPT Image 2.6 on high, and dearer than it on low. Our real 4:5 ads on GPT Image 2.6, with five reference images, cost $0.088 to $0.108, of which $0.04 to $0.06 was the reference images. Full workings are in GPT Image 2.6 pricing.
Quality: what the leaderboards say
Arena ranks models from blind votes between two images. On its 2 November 2026 snapshot, OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 and 2.6 models took the top five places for text to image. GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst scored 1409 and Nano Banana 2.1 1325. For image editing, 2.6 Sunburst scored 1476 and Nano Banana 2.1 1427. The 2.6 entries were preliminary, with about 3,000 votes each, and were tested at medium quality.
Artificial Analysis had not listed 2.6 when we checked. On its boards GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst at max quality ranked first for text to image, and Nano Banana 2.1 fourth, at $33.6 per 1,000 images against $210.7 for 2.5 Sunburst at max. That price gap is the trade: OpenAI's top quality costs several times more per image.
Features that matter for ads
GPT Image 2.6 has the more ad-specific tools. Nano Banana 2.1 has the bigger canvas and takes more references.
| Feature | GPT Image 2.6 | Nano Banana 2.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Sizes | Custom, in multiples of 16, so 1088 x 1360 for 4:5 | Priced in 1K, 2K and 4K tiers |

| Largest size | Up to 3,840 pixels, experimental above 2560 x 1440 | 4K |
