The best AI image models for ads in 2026: 11 compared
Updated
The best AI image model for ads in November 2026 is OpenAI's GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst for finished ads with copy and real products, and GPT Image 2.6 Flare when speed matters. Google's Nano Banana 2.1 is the best value, at $0.0336 for a standard image, and Recraft V4.1 is the pick for vector logos and icons. OpenAI's GPT Image models held the top five places on Arena's text-to-image leaderboard on 2 November 2026.
An ad needs less than art does, but needs it exactly: the right words, the real product, edits from reference images, Meta's sizes and a sensible cost per finished image. We compared eleven models on those points using each maker's published prices and features and the public leaderboards, and tested OpenAI's models on real ads ourselves.
Quick picks

Fastest: GPT Image 2.6 Flare, at 16 to 26 seconds per 4:5 ad in our tests, for the same cost as Sunburst.
Best value at scale: Nano Banana 2.1, at $0.0336 for a 1K image and half that in Batch.

OpenAI: GPT Image 2.6
OpenAI released GPT Image 2.6 on 4 November 2026 as Sunburst, its base model for detail and precise edits, and Flare, a smaller model for speed. Both cost $8 per million image input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, take custom sizes in multiples of 16 and add a complexity setting, markup-guided edits, SVG and animated GIF output. In our tests both spelled every line of a list ad correctly and copied a supplement label word for word; Flare was two to three times faster. Our full write-up is in GPT Image 2.6 explained.
Google: Nano Banana 2.1
Google's newest image model, updated in October 2026, is the value pick: $0.0336 for a 1K image, $0.0504 for 2K and $0.113 for 4K, with Batch at half price. It accepts up to 14 reference images and Google says its text rendering is enhanced. It ranked seventh on Arena for text to image. The head-to-head is in GPT Image 2.6 vs Nano Banana 2.1.
Microsoft, xAI and Alibaba
Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6, generally available in Foundry since 27 October 2026, ranked sixth on Arena. It is priced per token, at $8 per million image input tokens and $38 per million output tokens, outputs up to 1.5K and takes up to five references. xAI's Grok Imagine Image 2.0 costs $0.04 an image on xAI's price list, works at 1K or 2K and has an edits endpoint. Alibaba's Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro costs $0.04 at 1K and $0.075 at 2K in Singapore, and Alibaba says it renders text as small as 10 pixels in 12 languages.
ByteDance and Black Forest Labs
ByteDance's Seedream 5.0 Pro, released on 8 July 2026, costs $0.045 an image up to 2.61 megapixels and offers point, lasso, box and doodle edits. ByteDance itself says it has room to improve on fine text, which matters for ads with small copy. Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3 Image costs $0.048 at 1K and $0.10 at 2K, takes up to 10 references and renders natively at 2K and 4K. Its open-weights sibling, FLUX 3 Image Klein, released on 15 October 2026, costs $0.009 at 1K through the API and can also run on your own hardware, subject to its licence.
Ideogram, Recraft and Midjourney
Ideogram 4.5, out on 30 September 2026, renders natively at 2K and costs between 0.8 and 22 cents an image across its modes. Recraft V4.1 is built around native vector output, at $0.08 a vector image, and its Flash version costs $0.007 for a raster image. GPT Image 2.6 can also return SVG. Midjourney V8.2 has been the default Midjourney model since 24 July 2026, but we found no official API, so it cannot sit inside an automated ad workflow the way the others can. None of the three appeared in the top 20 of the leaderboards we checked.
What to look for in an image model for ads
Exact text. Every word of the headline, list and button has to be right, and small text is where models slip.
The real product. The model should copy your packaging from photos, not invent a lookalike.
Reference images. Ads start from a proven layout and your product photos, so the model must take several images in.
Meta's sizes. 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16, at 1080 pixels wide once scaled.
Cost per finished ad, including the reference images you send, not just the output price.
Speed, if a person is waiting on the result.
Provenance. OpenAI marks GPT Image 2.6 output with C2PA metadata and a SynthID watermark.
How to test models on your own ads
Write one brief and send the same prompt and reference images to each model.
Ask for the same size and quality, and record the time and the token use or price of each response.
Read every word and compare the product with your photos line by line.
Run the best two as real ads, and judge them on cost per result in Ads Manager, not on looks.
Where Mockingbird fits
The model is one part of a good ad. The rest is the layout you start from, the words in your brand's voice and your real product. Mockingbird starts from a winning Meta ad in a library approved by hand, reads your website for your brand voice, writes the prompt and renders the ad on GPT Image 2.6 with your product photos. You see your first ad in your brand before you pay.
