Creative fatigue and ad frequency on Meta

Creative fatigue is the decline in an ad's results after its audience has seen the same image or video too often. Ad frequency is the measure of that repetition, the average number of times each account saw an ad. This topic explains both, using Meta's own definitions and the delivery statuses Ads Manager shows.

Every ad that keeps spending builds exposure, so a winning ad eventually costs more per result. Knowing how Meta counts exposure, what triggers its Creative limited and Creative fatigue statuses, and where frequency caps exist lets you tell a tired ad from a costly week in the auction.

Key terms

Common questions

Is creative fatigue the same as ad fatigue?
The two terms describe the same effect. Meta's Business Help Centre uses creative fatigue for its delivery statuses and recommendations, and ad fatigue on its frequency help page. Both mean results falling because people have seen the same ad too often.
Do Meta's creative fatigue warnings appear for every ad set?
No. Meta offers them only for ad sets with one creative, and not for Advantage+ catalogue ads, dynamic creative or Advantage+ app campaigns. Ad sets using the sales objective get them only once they are active.
Can Advantage+ creative help with creative fatigue?
Meta lists trying Advantage+ creative as one of its fatigue recommendations. It creates variations of an ad from a single image or video and shows each person the version Meta predicts they will respond to. Meta says it is available only for the traffic or sales objectives with a website destination.
Does a broader audience reduce ad frequency?
A larger audience gives delivery more people to reach before it repeats, and Meta recommends expanding the audience when it detects fatigue. Budget still matters, because a bigger budget uses up a bigger audience faster.
