Ad creative, explained
Ad creative is everything a person sees in an ad: the image or video, the words on it and the copy around it. This topic explains two parts of how creative works on Facebook and Instagram. The first is the static ad, the single still image that most accounts run next to video. The second is creative diversity, Meta's case for running ads that differ in substance rather than in small details.
Creative carries more weight on Meta than it once did. Advantage+ automates much of the audience targeting, and Meta's retrieval system picks a shortlist of ads for each person from tens of millions of candidates, so the ad itself tells the system who it suits. Knowing what makes ads different, and what Meta does and does not say about similar ads, helps you decide what to make next.

Common questions
- What is ad creative?
- Ad creative is the content of an ad that people see and hear: the image or video, any text on it, the primary text, the headline and the call to action. In Meta Ads Manager it sits at the ad level, below the campaign and the ad set. It is the part of an account that advertisers change most often.
- Does creative matter more than targeting on Meta?
- Meta's own 2025 guidance says the focus has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification, because Advantage+ automates much of the audience targeting. The ad itself now does much of the work of finding the right people. Different ads give the system more ways to reach different groups.
- Does Meta change my ad creative automatically?
- It can. Advantage+ creative enhancements can crop or adjust images, expand them to fit other placements, add animation or generate new backgrounds, and Meta says some may be turned on by default. You can review and turn them off in the ad's settings before you publish.
- What is a UGC ad?
- A UGC ad, short for user-generated content ad, is an ad made from content by customers or paid creators rather than a brand's studio team. It usually looks like an ordinary social post, such as a spoken review or a phone-filmed demo. Brands run UGC ads to add a different format, persona and visual style to their mix.
